Episode 11: Track Your Cycle for Balance

Updated: Apr 3, 2023

In our eleventh podcast episode, we discuss women's cycles and how we can be more in tune with our monthly cycles with our fantastic guest speaker, Sughra Khaliq. A super insightful session with lots of beautiful shares and advice along the way. Sughra talks of her own experiences which started with her diagnosis of endometriosis 25 years ago and how this led her to specialise in Mizan Therapy.

TRACK YOUR CYCLE FOR BALANCE

In this episode, we are highlighting the importance of talking about periods and how we can track them to create more balance, flow and harmony within our body-mind-soul.

  • Sughra explains how being on the pill can actually disconnect you physically, spiritually and emotionally from your hormone cycle and the detrimental effects this can cause. There’s a difference between a period bleed and a break-though bleed (the latter being what women experience being on the pill).

  • What is Mizan Therapy? Sughra explains how she discovered it and how it helped her heal her endometriosis. We all talk about our own experiences with our cycles and how this has been shaped over the years through society and social media.

  • Sughra points out that it’s not normal to have period pain - if you have pain it’s an indicator that something is out of balance. This can be emotional or physical. The womb space - our sacral chakra - can hold and store emotional trauma, something that’s not always considered or addressed.

  • Sughra talks about periods being a superpower - especially when we start to observe and honour them like the seasons.

  • Tracking your cycle - the winter period is from day 1-7 menstruation week when you have your lowest energy. It’s important to go inwards, creative reflection, ask for help, reviewing things. Day 8-14 is the follicular phase where your body is preparing for ovulation - fun time, being creative, the spring element - you have increased energy levels - you can take action. Phase 3 is day 15-21, this is the ovulation phase - your inner summer, you feel sociable, friendly, approachable. Then the 4th phase is the luteal phase - you might want to pull back on plans, great for problem solving, inspired creatively, enjoy a bit of solitude.

  • How would you cycle track if you don’t have a period and have gone through the menopause? Sughra recommends a book called Full Circle Health by Lucy H. Pearce. She suggests you start tracking your cycle from the new moon.

  • Sughra gives some great simple tips you can consider during menstrual week -it’s great because she includes NO VACUUMING! Whoop! Keeping your feet warm - don’t walk bare feet on cold floors. Don’t have too many processed foods. Don’t do intense exercise because of the impact it has on your joints and ligaments. Plus a few more ideas she shares with us.

  • How does Mizan Therapy work? Sughra talks about how important your menstrual history is and the emotional connection as a first step before the treatment begins. Then there is an abdominal massage then aftercare advice that you can do at home. The purpose of the massage is to rejuvenate fresh blood to that area and this helps to remove any stagnation. Pelvic rocking and lymphatic draining through the legs is also carried out during the session. It takes about an hour and is both physical and energetic work.
